Cholera is an acute diarrheal disease caused by infection of the intestine with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae, either type O1 or type O139. Both children and adults can be infected. The case fatality rate in untreated cases may be 30–50%. Researchers have estimated that each year there are 1.3 to 4.0 million cases of cholera, and 21,000 to 143,000 deaths worldwide due to cholera.
